River Grove is the place we chose for rehabilitation after Peter's angioplasty. We had no idea what we were in for or whether we'd be able to keep it up long enough to have any effect. River Grove turned out to have not just excellent facilities and equipment, but more importantly, excellent people! The staff are friendly, competent, supportive, and efficient. Our fellow patrons have turned out to be wonderfully supportive as well, and in many cases have become good friends. Thanks to River Grove, we have been transformed from overweight, out-of-condition, potentially dangerous divers staggering from year to year, into fit and able divers ready for (with luck) another ten years with the honu. For helping us stay healthy, alive, and capable of continuing to dive with the honu, we say, "Mahalo nui loa, River Grove!"

When Cuba began circulating its proposal to CITES to downlist the Caribbean hawksbill so that trade with Japan in hawksbill shells could resume, a number of people and organizations began working to make sure that the proposal never passed. Any attempt to enumerate them would inevitably miss some, so instead we'd like to refer to them as Team Turtle 2000. For the efforts expended in protecting the Caribbean hawksbill--and we know that a lot of hard work went into this--we bestow our Mahalo Award.

Tim Clark has worked several nesting seasons at the French Frigate Shoals, and he just might hold the record for the longest tour of duty at East Island next to George H. Balazs, of the US National Marine Fisheries Service. Even more special, Tim was the person who tagged Mendelbrot (U 359). For Tim's dedication to the nesting honu at East Island, French Frigate Shoals, we present him with our Mahalo Award. We hope he gets to make East Island his summer "home" for the summer 1999 nesting season!

For inspiring and guiding through its passage Florida Legislature Resolution S 2676/H 9443, which recognizes fibropapilloma tumors as a serious threat to Florida's turtles.
For their part in bringing about the signing of an agreement for the conservation of Caribbean sea turtles by Costa Rica, Panama, and Nicaragua.
